Diabetes Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes, a complex group of conditions, leads to excessive blood sugar (glucose). While blood sugar is vital to fuel every cell throughout your body, too much of it leads to nerve, tissue, and organ damage.

In general, diabetes is broken down into these categories: Type 1, Type 2, and prediabetes.

Type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is often called juvenile diabetes because it begins in childhood. With this type of diabetes, your pancreas produces little-to-no insulin, a vital hormone.

Because insulin is crucial for blood sugar absorption, your blood sugar skyrockets without it. This is why it’s necessary to get insulin into your body through regular injections or an insulin pump.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes often develops later in life, which is why it’s nicknamed adult-onset diabetes. With Type 2 diabetes, your pancreas produces some insulin.

However, the insulin you produce comes in abnormally low levels or your body just can’t utilize it (insulin resistance). While Type 2 diabetes is commonly linked to obesity, pancreatic infections or other issues can also lead to the condition.

Prediabetes

It’s also possible to develop prediabetes. This condition occurs before Type 2 diabetes and leads to higher-than-normal glucose levels. Prediabetes is oven reversible with prompt medical intervention.

Does diabetes cause symptoms?

Not always. Generally, the diabetes symptoms you experience occur when your blood sugar becomes dangerously high. It’s important to meet with Dr. Dwivedi if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Tingling, burning, or numbness in your extremities
  • Frequent infections or slow-healing wounds
  • Increased thirst and frequent urination
  • Sudden or unexplained weight loss
  • Ravenous appetite
  • Chronic fatigue

Since diabetes causes widespread problems, it’s important to get started on treatment if you experience any of these issues. Diabetes isn’t curable, although this chronic condition is certainly manageable with the help of Dr. Dwivedi.

How does a doctor treat diabetes?

Treating diabetes requires ongoing medications, weight management, and nutrition counseling. Dr. Dwivedi monitors you regularly and runs labs to ensure your blood sugar levels stay as stable as possible.

Insulin is always necessary for Type 1 diabetes, and in some cases, Dr. Dwivedi recommends insulin injections for managing Type 2 diabetes, too. But in many cases, Type 2 diabetes is manageable with medications that help enhance insulin production or efficacy.
